Pet Screen and Emco (Anderson) Forever Screen Doors

by Charlie
(New England)

We have three cats that love to tear up our screens. I bought some Pet Screen only to find (when I tried to install it) that our screen door (made by Emco and sold by Anderson) has this odd flat plastic spline. (What was wrong with the old round spline? If ain't broke, don't fix it!)

Anyway, of course, the old spline won't work with the thicker Pet Screen. Soooooo, my question is, has anybody come up with a spline that will work with Pet Screen and Emco (Anderson) screen doors? I know I will eventually find a way to make these two work together, (oh yes, I will) but if someone could save me some time I would really appreciate it.

screen replacement NEW
by: Anonymous

You can keep Emco storm doors. Replacing the screen with the flat spline is almost impossible. If you find the spline, you have to buy this huge roll when you only need about 25 feet. It was cheaper to buy a new storm door (without the flat spline) then it was to replace the screen.

NEVER buy anything with EMCO or ANDERSON name !
by: Anonymous

Same as everyone else out there....I bought this EMCO/ANDERSON storm door an paid $499 and it looked nice until the cat sliced a small hole. I bought the standard screen replacement stuff and then was horrified to see some FLAT RIBBON SPLINE ! I called everywhere and found 1 hardware store that still replaces screens. He said IF it was a round spline style it would be $24 for parts and labor.....He also said if it is that TERRIBLE EXPENSIVE FLAT RIBBON SPLINE, It will cost $125 parts and labor due to the extra cost of such a high cost of flat spline and the EXTRA LABOR involved using the terrible flat spline.
I also had many other issues with door such as all brass thumb screws holding the window in stripped out in the door and spin and discoloration of the brass hardware and door was just very poorly made. EMCO REFUSED to honor any warranty because I did NOT have the ORIGINAL receipt because the contractor that did the job just gave me a bill for the total and then marked paid on that and they even INCLUDED the door serial number but EMCO/ANDERSON REFUSED to honor the warranty and for that....I will NEVER BUY ANYTHING WITH THE NAMES of EMCO or ANDERSON,....TOTAL GARBAGE COMPANY AND RUBBISH PRODUCTS !!!!!!

Anderson storm door screen spline the worst
by: Anonymous

I think Anderson owes all their customers a refund for their crappy design. They hold owners hostage with their proprietary design. If owners knew this before purchasing, I think most if not all would go elsewhere. I bought a house with these things installed and am trying to figure out if it is more cost-effective to just replace the entire door.

I'd love to say this to Anderson in person, but sadly they make that impossible as well.

Pet Screen and Anderson Emco Screen Doors
by: Charlie

I said I would figure this out, and I did. I just finished installing the screen and looks great! This is a tedious, labor intensive job, and if you're not a handy person I wouldn't try it. You will need 3M double sided tape that you will have to cut into strips, then cut the one inch wide strips into 1/4 inch strips. The reason is, you have to use three layers of double sided tape to fill the gap that the spline used to occupy. With three layers the tape is up just enough from the surface to stick the pet screen to. You will need a NEW single sided razor blade to slice the tape. Use waxed paper between the sticky side of the tape and your cutting board to keep the tape from sticking to the board. (duh) When you're ready to lay the screen down on the frame with the tape use wax paper again so you can attach one side at a time. Cut the screen to fit, then use one inch Gorilla duct tape to hold the screen to the frame. E-mail me for more in depth directions. hrhchazman at aol dot com.

Anderson Screen Spline
by: Anonymous

I have an Anderson 3000 screen door. Had to replace the screen but the old spline is 1/4inch wide and from the side looks like the letter "D". The flat side of the "D" goes in the screen groove to hole in the screening. Can't find this anywhere. I had the serial # of the door so I called EMCO. There answer was they don't make that spline anymore and my only option was to either purchase a complete new screen or make one myself. The door is only 4 year's old and now obsolete as far as replacement parts go.

Answer to Shawn D
by: Charlie

Shawn, I'm pretty sure I've figured it out, I just haven't had the time to do it yet. I'm pretty confident that I can do it with Scotch Extremely Strong double sided mounting tape. Let me know if you're still interested.
